Introduction

During the post-bubble decade, many major developments have been devolving from the metropolis to the regional prefectures, resulting in increased awareness for the quality and impact on the environment. As a consequence the art and architectural relationship to the natural context is set to become amongst the most important design concerns of the 21st century. Similarly the production of buildings which promote quality of life and the occupant's wellbeing is a key social factor for which the Nature of Health Design section is assembled.

Project Japan locates art, architecture, landscape and health care design in the context of present day Japan. Produced between 1996 and 2004 Project Japan features buildings by renowned contemporary architects such as Tadao Ando and Toyo Ito with work by other leading or emerging architects many of which remain unseen in the west. The specialist disks include contain Classical Japanese architecture and gardens. the Nature of Health Design project and the Nature of Japanese Architecture. The latest section includes public projects in the UK by Japanese artists and other compilations which are currently in development.

A Project Japan

Art in relation to architecture and the built environment is the under-lying theme of the Project Japan documentation. DVD1 contains a range of art-media in the urban context, with examples of art-landscapes such as the Site of Reversible Destiny, Fog Forest and mobile installations by Susumu Shingu. DVD2 features famous buildings like the Sony Building by Kisho Kurokawa, Hillside Terrace by Fumihiko Maki and Waterglass House by Kengo Kuma, amongst structures by many other less well known designers. The third disk is dedicated to the public work of Osaka architect Tadao Ando including the Awaji Island Temple and the recently completed Manchester Piccadilly Gardens redevelopment. DVD 4 presents a collection of schemes by architect Toyo Ito, and mobile artist Susumu Shingu. The fifth selection offers an introduction to Traditional & Post Meiji Japanese architecture and gardens.
